Sports Picks questions. Here are some F.A.Q. (frequently asked questions) that our staff has answered in the past.

  1. Q: Why are some people so lucky?

A: When a person always seems to be lucky, he's good! The person who always seems to be unlucky, isn't unlucky, he's just bad.

  2. Q: What is handicapping?

A: "The handicapping experience is an accumulation of winning edges." Quoted by Mort Olshan.

  3. Q: What are the true winning percentages?

A: At 52.38% winners, your bankroll should neither go up or down in the long run.

  4. Q: I think I have all the handicapping fundamentals. What is missing?

A: Never forget, HUMILITY is a fundamental to winning.

  5. Q: What is winning?

A:"Winning is more of a methodical effort than a determined effort." Quoted by Bob McCune.

  6. Q: I think I have a gambling problem?

A: If you admit you have a problem, the problem is already half solved.

  7. Q: Sometimes I feel like I shouldn't bet?

A: Never bet when you are emotionally upset, depressed or tired, etc.

  8. Q: What are my chances of winning?

A: Your chance of winning is directly related to your knowledge of the opposition. quoted by Bob McCune.

  9. Q: Is there any validity to trends?

A: History does not always repeat itself.

  10. Q: Why do I always lose?

A: Poor money management is the reason 90% of all sports bettors lose.

  11. Q: What is the most important part of winning?

A: 35 years ago there were two basic rules:

    1) PRESS WHEN YOU ARE WINNING
    2) RETREAT WHEN YOU ARE LOSING

But it is not that easy ... too many people reverse these axioms. The average investor will allow themselves to lose more than they will permit themselves to win. Winning streaks and losing streaks are guaranteed. It is the nature of the business. It's a mathematical certainty.

A good rule of thumb is to play 2% of your bankroll until it goes up 50%, then increase your plays 50%. Do the reverse if your bankroll goes down. Try not to risk more than 20% of your bankroll at one time and over this amount only if you making 10 or more plays simultaneously. I wouldn't risk more than 18% while making 5-6 plays at a time. If you make 1-3 plays a day, risking 10% of your gross bankroll at one time, might be safe. If you go broke, it won't because you didn't pick winners, it will most likely be due to bad money management.

  12. Q: Should I seek help handicapping?

A: YES! Do't let your ego get in the way when you are risking money.
