NFL Football Handicapping & Betting Tips
The most important part of handicapping is discipline and money management. Discipline will be reflected in our selections. Money management you must learn yourself.
We don't believe in rating, or giving stars to our selections. They're all of merit. Doubling up or chasing can be counterproductive in the long run. SPORTS INSIGHT is not saying that it can't be helpful to increase your plays when going good (not 1 winning week) and decrease them when going bad. That's part of good money management.
The injury factor in evaluating football is overrated. It is a phony practice, practiced by some people to fool other people into believing they have an edge. Many coaches play the injury gimmick like a game of chess. Losing a starter does not always hurt a team, especially against the point spread. It may actually help in some situations. These players are professionals and most of them are at least 80% as good as the person they are replacing. When a famous player is out, be willing to bet on the underdog, no matter which team is the underdog. When two starting linemen are out, especially on defense, the offense will go after the replacements. Beware of betting on the team with two starting linemen out. This is a situation where it might be more advantageous to bet against such a team. The positions where the loss of a starter has the biggest effect on the point spread are CENTER, QUARTERBACK, MIDDLE LINEBACKER AND KICKER. The player that instills a winning attitude and is a leader, can be sorely missed.
AVOID NFL FOOTBALL PRE SEASON BETTING
The NFL preseason is all about speculation and professional NFL Football handicappers are only interested in winning, not speculation. Because we are dedicated to winning we do not make predictions on NFL preseason games. When we put picks out there we expect them to win and there are too many intangibles during the preseason.
The coach and his philosophy is a major factor in the preseason. A coach and the players might be trying to save their jobs or get some momentum. The team might be trying to work on their passing in one game, the ground attack in another, and they'll stay with the game plan regardless of the score. Some teams will use exhibition games to showcase players they want to trade. If two teams are going to play again in the regular season, they will often keep a few things under wraps in the preseason.
The quarterback is important in preseason because the team will seldom go with their first string quarterback more than half of the game. This goes for all likely starters. It is a time of year to try new players, ideas and strategies. There is a tendency for home teams to play harder during exhibition games because of home fan pressure. Many handicappers skip the preseason because not as many statistics are available. The goal of the coach in an NFL preseason is to get ready for the regular season.
Preseason totals (over/unders) are a guessing game. You have to know what a coach is trying to do and how he wants to do it for success with totals.
